Space of Reflection

In an already constructed social system, human beings are formed by established social norms, values, and culture. In this irreversible cult of individualism, in the society of individuals, the question arises, where is the limit of individual reflection, and where is the reflection of collective influence on the individual? Is the individual today even able to know his being or are these moments called weakness and cacophony? This work problematizes two relationships, the relationship between the individual and modern society and the relationship between the individual and the spatial context in which the work is presented. Examining what we consider to be true, our inner reflection, the mirror reflection, becomes both subject and object viewed from a perspective that will never be the same. By placing the installation in a new space, the city of Novi Sad, a new context and a new ephemeral theatricalization of the public space is created, in which the audience is displaced from the everyday viewing of the work. With this, the statement asks the audience a direct question: When are we aware of the role we carry with us, and when does it stop and become an illusion?

Exploring the notion of self-realization as a singular journey towards embracing one’s essence and navigating personal decisions that shape an evolving individual identity, I am prompted to contemplate the feasibility of collective self-realization. Initially confronting my own reflection served as a pivotal starting point for inquiry. Reflecting on this introspective moment, I conceived the “Space of Reflection,” an intimate, interactive spatial sound installation.

This installation takes the form of a cube crafted from two-way mirrors, designed to evoke profound personal introspection through its auditory components. Embedded within are poignant narratives questioning the essence of identity and the subtle societal influences that shape it unconsciously. The dual mirrors symbolize the genesis of the idea itself: for genuine transformation, one must first confront and acknowledge oneself. Through this awareness, one begins to discern external influences that have contributed to their self-construction, enabling conscious introspection and the potential for deliberate change.

Central to the concept is the visitor’s role as both participant and observed within the installation’s duration. Positioned within the cube, the visitor becomes an unwitting performer, visible to others through the mirrored surfaces. The “Space of Reflection” orchestrates a compelling encounter, compelling individuals to confront themselves unabashedly.

In essence, this installation seeks to engender a profound engagement with one’s identity, fostering an intimate dialogue that resonates with the broader inquiry into collective self-realization.
